Rachael & Red Hill Therapy

I’m Rachael, an experienced counsellor and psychotherapist based in Red Hill, Brisbane. I’ve worked with a wide range of clients from all backgrounds, building on a special interest in trauma-informed practice and healing. I’ve worked with women, men and gender-diverse adults and teenagers with a range of different therapeutic styles.

I have always placed immense value in the transformative power of person-to-person connection.

Growing up in a large family, I became well-versed in ‘reading’ people quickly from a young age. I grew up with disabled and neurodiverse siblings who taught me a lot about human behaviour, communication and about how justice and compassion go hand in hand. Essentially, the transition to therapist as a career has felt natural and authentic to who I am.

I have a passion for counselling, but my favourite pastime is reading. I have a degree in English Literature and a Masters of Counselling, and I couldn’t have imagined how well these areas work together for understanding the inner lives of human beings.

I feel as though I have lived many lives. I have lived in Meanjin, London, Naarm (Melbourne) and then come back to Meanjin to call sunny, leafy Red Hill my home. In a previous life, I’ve worked in call centers, pubs, a deli counter, a law firm, in publishing, in book stores, as a copywriter and as a disability support worker.

As a counsellor, I’ve worked in domestic violence and trauma recovery organisations, with teenagers living through childhood trauma, and in both short and long-term therapeutic spaces as an EAP counsellor. I’ve also worked as a men’s accountability practitioner in the domestic violence space and helped victim-survivors in their recovery.

When I’m not in the therapy room, I’m raising two hilarious little girls with my husband. You’ll also find me going to concerts around Brisbane, trying hard (and often failing) at yoga and tennis (but having fun anyway), and of course, reading fiction.

My Values

“House on Kennedy Tce” - T. Crouch (2024)

My therapeutic practice is dynamic: it changes depending on the needs of my clients. But, what never changes are my use of narrative, trauma-informed, social justice and intersectional feminist frameworks. These frameworks holds space for the challenges marginalized people face as a result of bias, stereotyping, oppression and discrimination, and how those stressors can negatively affect their mental health. It is based on the belief that mental wellness is inextricably linked to an individual’s social and cultural identities and the political landscape in which they live, work and play.

I offer an LGBTQAI+ friendly space that recognises the strength and resilience of people who have navigated their sexuality within a world that discriminates against those living outside heteronormativity.

I recognise the many neurodivergent presentations and disabilities people live with, and employ the social model of disability. I will work to ensure your access needs are met and will put compassion and safety first in our therapeutic relationships.

I work to create a culturally sensitive practice: I recognise the many and varied needs of culturally and linguistically diverse people. I acknowledge the Yuggera, Jagera and Turrbal Peoples and acknowledge the traditional custodians of this land. I pay respect to the Elders past and present. I am committed to honoring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples’ wisdom, heritage, beliefs and continued connection to Country. This was and always will be Aboriginal land.
